Make your own eco-friendly air freshener

Make your home an unwelcome place for cancer-causing chemicals and keep it smelling nice with these easy tips for making your own natural air freshener.

By Jaclyn Desforges

By now, you've probably heard all about phthalates -- chemicals designed to soften plastic that can increase your cancer risk. Some phthalates have been banned in children's products, but they're still used in certain air freshener brands to make that "fresh" scent last longer.

You can clear the air of these dangerous chemicals by forgoing many commercial air fresheners in your home. Instead, follow these three easy tips to keep your home smelling fresh the natural way.

1. Open a window
Increase airflow and get rid of stale odours by leaving the windows in your home open as often as possible. Unpleasant odours will pack up and leave, and your lungs will get some much-needed fresh air.

2. Use DIY air freshener
While fresh air will usually do the trick, some smells need a little extra help to be on their way out.

Making your own air freshener is cheap and easy. Pour 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of water into a small ceramic bowl. Add about a tablespoon of nice-smelling spices such as cinnamon or whole cloves. Keep this bowl near a heat source (such as a sunny window) and wait. The vinegar will kill airborne mould as it evaporates while your home is filled with the scent of the spices.

3. Battle cooking smells naturally
When cooking strong-smelling dishes such as liver and onions, there's an easy way to manage the resulting odour.

Take the vinegar, water and spice mix described above and simmer it in an open pot on the stove. Turn on the fan and, before long, your home will be smelling fresh and clean the eco-friendly way.
