Pancake recipes with a twist

It's time to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, or as kids (of all ages) have come to know, Pancake Tuesday -- a delicious occasion when you can enjoy stacks of your favourite flapjacks!

Traditionally celebrated as a way to cook with eggs, milk and sugar before cutting back on rich foods for Lent, pancakes take centre stage at the breakfast, lunch and dinner table on Pancake Tuesday.

Spice up your usual stacks with one of these pancake recipes:

Passover Whole Wheat Buttermilk Pancakes
Topped with a pat of butter and drizzled with maple or other pancake syrup, these wholesome pancakes will be a real surprise at your breakfast table.

Chocolate Griddle Cakes with Strawberry Madeira Cream
These rich but light-texture pancakes are made with real melted chocolate, as opposed to cocoa powder. As always, use the best-quality chocolate for the best results.

Crispy Potato Pancake
A simple, delicious recipe for busy weeknights.

Kamut Pancakes
Another old relative of wheat (kamut grains have been excavated from ancient Egyptian tombs), kamut has huge grains two or three times the size of wheat. The hearty flavour of whole kamut makes it particularly suitable for pancakes.

Chinese Savoury Green Onion Pancakes
Called "onion oil cakes" in China, these crispy, savoury pancakes are originally from northern China, where they are often served as part of a meal. The pancakes are sometimes served with a little hot sauce or dipping sauce; to make your own, mix equal parts soy sauce and rice vinegar with a touch of sugar and hot sauce or hot peppers to taste.

Korean-Style Corn Pancakes
Korean pancakes always include loads of vegetables and often meat and/or seafood. You can serve these pancakes as part of a dinner spread or as an appetizer. If you wish, replace half of the hot pepper with some julienned sweet pepper.
