Because wheat, barley and oats were often the first crops planted in newly tilled fields, they were a mainstay of pioneer diets. Our ancestors must have had a hunch about how vital whole grains are to a healthy diet. Low in fat and high in fibre, grains are also a good source of protein, B vitamins, magnesium and zinc.
