Yogurt has been a nutritional star in many countries for centuries. It's only over the past several decades that it has won similar accolades here in North America. Like milk, yogurt is packed with a range of nutrients, including protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and B vitamins.
Yogurt is made by adding bacterial cultures to milk and allowing it to ferment. Probiotic yogurts with live, active cultures have certain added strains of bacteria with known health benefits. Some strains have been shown to boost immune-system function, while others may help alleviate constipation and bloating.
Because of the addition of these friendly bacteria, probiotic yogurts are recommended following the use of antibiotics, which kills both harmful and beneficial bacteria in the gut.
According to Canada's Food Guide, you need 3/4 cup/175 mL of yogurt to make up a full serving of dairy. Consider what else is in the container. For example, if your yogurt cup has added fruit, jam or cereal, then you are getting less yogurt.
