Candied Pear or Apple Slices

Ingredients

  • 2 cups  (500)  granulated sugar
  • 3 firm pears or 3 firm-fleshed apples (Granny Smith, Red Delicious)

Preparation

In saucepan, boil sugar and 2 cups/500 mL water until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Meanwhile, cut pears or apples into 1/8-inch/3 mm slices; submerge in syrup and simmer until translucent, 5 to 8 minutes.

With slotted spatula or spoon, lay pears or apples on parchment paper-lined baking trays; bake in 300°F/150°C oven until dried, 10 to 20 minutes. Carefully lift pears or apples to loosen; let cool on tray on rack. Dry overnight or longer until thoroughly dried. Store in airtight container until ready to hang on tree.

Makes about 36 pear or apple slices.
