Broiled Grapefruit

This American favourite really needs no recipe; it's just a reminder that very simple desserts can be elegant and satisfying.
Ingredients
- 2 large grapefruits
- 2 tbsp (30 mL) amber rum, dark or spiced rum
- 3 tbsp (45 mL) dark brown sugar
- Pinch salt
Preparation
Halve grapefruits crosswise; if necessary, cut off and discard thin slice from each end so halves sit upright. Run grapefruit knife or flexible serrated knife around rind and along each side of membranes.
Set on rimmed baking sheet; drizzle with rum and evenly sprinkle with sugar and salt. Watching closely to prevent sugar from burning, broil until bubbly and golden, 5 to 6 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature.
