The good news about weight gain: it's not your fault. Dr. Lorraine Lipscombe, one of Canada's foremost experts in women and weight, says that human beings are "hard-wired to conserve energy" -- that is, to eat lots and to exercise no more than we need to. But that's the bad news as well: we're programmed to pack on poundage. However, at a seminar, Dr. Lipscombe - who is a staff physician in the department of endocrinology and metabolism at Women's College Hospital - also explained how to beat the gene bank, get to your healthiest weight and stay there.

Because we a) have easy access to high-energy (read: high-calorie) foods and b) are very inactive compared to just 40 years ago, most of us are gaining weight. The fact that 2/3 of all Canadians are overweight or obese means we are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease and certain cancers.
